4G is short for the fourth generation of mobile phone technology, following 2G (GSM1), 2.5G (GPRS2 or EDGE3) and 3G network technology. OPT-NC’s 4G network is currently New Caledonia’s fastest and most advanced mobile phone network.
The 4G network is designed to provide instant, easy and secure internet access from a phone, tablet or computer.
1GSM (Global System for Mobile communications): open and digital cellular technology used for mobile communication (circuit-switched).
2GPRS (General Packet Radio Service): packet-switching protocol for wireless and cellular network communication services
3EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution): provides a higher rate of data transmission than normal GSM. EDGE is considered a pre-3G radio technology.
